COVID-19: India Starts Massive Vaccine Rollout

India on Saturday launched one of the largest coronavirus vaccination initiatives in the world, aiming to end a pandemic that has killed 150,000 people in the nation and torpedoed the economy.

AFP looks at the numbers involved in the large and complicated undertaking compounded by inadequate infrastructure, hoaxes online and questions over one of the vaccines being carried out while still in clinical trials.

India plans to inoculate about a quarter of the population, or 300 million individuals, over the coming months. They include health staff, persons over the age of 50 and others at high risk.

About 300,000 people were set to be vaccinated at 3,000 centers on the first day.
Around 150,000 workers have been qualified to
administer jabs and keep records in 700 districts.
